A consumer unit (often still called a fuse box) is the main electrical distribution board in your home or business. It takes the incoming mains supply from the meter and splits it into individual circuits for lighting, sockets, the cooker, the shower, the EV charger and so on. It is also where all of the protective devices sit: the main switch, the fuses or circuit breakers, and the RCDs or RCBOs that cut the power off when something goes wrong.
An older board does the first job reasonably well, but often does the second job poorly or not at all. A typical 1980s Wylex board with rewirable fuses offers no residual current protection and no way of detecting an earth fault quickly enough to prevent a serious shock. Boards from the 1990s and 2000s fitted only one or two RCDs to cover the whole house, which means a fault in one circuit takes out several others.
A modern 18th Edition consumer unit is built to a metal enclosure specification, provides individual RCBO protection on every circuit, and typically includes surge protection and, where appropriate, arc fault detection (AFDD). The result is a far safer installation, compliant with current regulations, and far less prone to nuisance tripping. Most domestic upgrades are completed within a single working day, and every job is tested and certified on completion.
Do I Need One?
Not every older board needs replacing, but several situations make an upgrade either a legal requirement or a sensible safety decision. These are the three most common reasons we are asked to carry out a consumer unit upgrade across Norwich and Norfolk.
A board that trips repeatedly is usually doing its job (there is a fault somewhere), but if the trips are happening without any obvious cause, or if the board has no RCD protection at all, the protective devices themselves may be at the end of their working life. Older boards with rewirable fuses offer no RCD protection and no way of quickly interrupting an earth fault. This is the single most common reason we replace a board.
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) that comes back unsatisfactory usually lists the consumer unit as a contributing factor. Common codes are C2 (potentially dangerous, remedial work required) for missing RCD protection and C3 (improvement recommended) for a plastic-enclosure board. If you are a landlord, an unsatisfactory EICR must be addressed within 28 days to remain legally compliant.
A modern EV charger or heat pump will often require a dedicated RCBO of a specific type, and an older board may not be able to accommodate this cleanly. Any rewire or extension usually triggers an upgrade under the "significant alteration" test in BS 7671. We always check the existing board at the quote stage and include any required upgrade in the fixed price.
The process
A typical domestic consumer unit upgrade from Hethersett Electrical includes the following.
A site visit or virtual survey to check the existing board, the incoming supply, the earthing arrangement, and the number of circuits. This is where we confirm whether the supply or tails need upgrading and identify any hidden issues.
A detailed written quote covering the new consumer unit, the breakers, any main switch or tail upgrade, the labour, the testing, the certification and the Building Control notification. No hidden extras.
Supply of a metal-enclosure 18th Edition consumer unit from a trusted manufacturer such as Hager, Wylex, Schneider or MK. We recommend the right size and specification for your property.
Full safe isolation from the incoming supply, including notification to your Distribution Network Operator (UK Power Networks for Norfolk) where tails or the main switch are being worked on.
Removal of the old board, installation of the new enclosure, transfer of each circuit across to its own RCBO, and neat re-termination of all conductors. Every circuit labelled clearly.
Installation of a Type 2 surge protection device (SPD) and arc fault detection (AFDD) where required by BS 7671. These are 18th Edition amendments and are increasingly expected on new installations.

"Fuse box" usually refers to older boards with rewirable fuses, while "consumer unit" describes a modern board with circuit breakers and RCD or RCBO protection. Replacing an old fuse box with a modern consumer unit is one of the most common upgrades we carry out.
An RCD protects against earth faults but is usually shared across several circuits, so a single fault can trip multiple circuits at once. An RCBO combines earth-fault and overload protection in one device on a single circuit, so a fault only ever affects that one circuit. Modern 18th Edition boards use individual RCBOs on every circuit, which is what we fit as standard.
For most domestic installations, yes. The 18th Edition wiring regulations require consumer units in domestic premises to have a non-combustible (typically metal) enclosure. All the boards we install meet this metal-enclosure specification.
Surge protection devices (SPDs) and arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) are 18th Edition amendments that are increasingly expected, and required in certain situations. SPDs protect your electronics from voltage spikes; AFDDs detect dangerous arcing faults. We will advise where they are required or recommended for your property and include them in your written quote.
Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As NAPIT-registered electricians we self-certify and notify Building Control on your behalf. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate on the day and a Building Control compliance certificate in the post.
Yes, and it often makes sense to. A rewire or a new EV charger circuit frequently requires board work anyway, so combining the jobs saves a second visit and a second round of testing. We will quote the whole package up-front as a single fixed price.
There is no fixed expiry date, but age is a useful guide. Boards with rewirable fuses (typically pre-1990s) and early plastic-enclosure boards with only one or two RCDs (1990s to 2000s) are the ones we most often replace, because they no longer meet current safety standards. If your board is more than about 20 years old, or you do not recognise the protective devices inside it, it is worth having it assessed.
